Hunters ready to resume from bye weekend

As part of a regular review of the Hunters’ progress, SP PNG Hunters Chairman Stan Joyce CSM and Director Jeremy Edwards have met with CEO Scott Barker and Head Coach Matt Church to discuss the Hunters’ performance.

It was also an opportunity to ensure the club’s long-term strategic plan remains on track and that agreed targets are being met.

The meeting acknowledged that this season’s results have not met the expectations of the club, which tasted premiership success in 2017.

United, DC Crew Grand Final Bound

United continued their unbeaten run to beat Gabutu Dragons 20-15 after they were stretched out during the entire game. With two minutes remaining, the scores were United leading at 16-15 on the board, with one minute remaining, Dragons Jefinda Sap dropped the ball as she dived over for the corner.

United an affiliate of Moresby South Rugby League comprised of outside players from Capital Rugby Union and Port Moresby Rugby while Crew’s are from the competitive PRL competition. The match is expected to be entertaining with an even contest coming from both teams

NRL opens season with storylines to clear rugby league’s clouds

Like a kid grinning through a new year’s school photos with two black eyes, men’s rugby league returns this week for its 115th season. Typically, there is as much conflict off the field as on, with players suiting up for new clubs against old ones, old rivalries resuming and fresh feuds between coaches and clubs in headlines and on sidelines.

Ipape Arrives At Leigh

Ipape has joined the Centurions from Queensland Cup side PNG Hunters. He had trials with NRL club Manly Sea Eagles in 2020 but they were ended by the coronavirus pandemic.

The hooker arrived in the country earlier this week and is named in Lam’s squad to face York on Sunday

All Stars, Charity Shield, double-headers headline pre-season

The Harvey Norman NRL All Stars will again kick off the season, with the 2022 fixture in Sydney for the first time on February 12, followed by two full rounds of NRL trials and the re-scheduled 2021 NRLW competition on February 27.

The opening round of the NRL premiership begins on March 10, with premiers Penrith hosting Manly.

NRL clubs will play trials on Friday night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday night from February 18 to February 28, with a 10-day break before the start of the competition.

Isou rising star passes on

Gairo aged 26 passed away on Sunday January 23, after a short illness.

The Gulf Isou management broke the sad news on Monday after his family confirmed his death.

Gairo aged 26 from Kelerakwa Village in Aroma Central Province, had a breakout season with the Gulf Isou last year and was voted Player of the Year, following his solid and consistent performance throughout the 2021 Digicel Cup season.

He was scouted by Isou in 2018 while playing for the Moresby Menjails in the NCD Governors Cup tournament and made his debut in Isou colors the following year 2019.

Kimbe set for CCIC challenge

CCIC Competition Manager Sam Koi approved and confirmed this, early this week. Draws are now already.

West New Britain and East New Britain (ENB) have always been part of the competition over the past decade however due to lack of sponsorship and logistical constraints, ENB couldn’t make it this year.

CCIC Competition Manager Sam Koi said while initial dialogues with New Ireland and the Autonomous Region Of Bougainville have been established with favorable feedbacks, effects of the pandemic has not made it possible.

‘Was just over it’: Norman calls time on rugby league career despite interest to play on

Norman was reportedly being considered by a number of clubs to play on in 2022 after he was let go by the Dragons last season.

However after 228 NRL games and one Origin for Queensland, the controversial playmaker confirmed to yktr.sports that he would hang up the boots.

“Yeah I was just like na I’m not even keen to play anymore hey,” Norman said on yktr.sports.

“I was just over it so I thought just call it a day.”

 

Rugby Comp Heats Up

Big wins were recorded in last Friday’s match with Funeral Home Laumas running havoc over Koiari Nagavis, thrashing them 46-10, and Moresby South Blacks 38 dumped Hiri West 4. 

In the other match results played last Friday, Gulf Isou 14 beat POM Suburban Ducks 8 
FH Laumas 46 thrash Koiari Nagavas 10, Eda Bulldogs 22 edged out Rigo Raiders 20 and Moresby South Blacks 38 dumped Hiri West Flames 4.
