The project started on April 1 and will be completed by the end of October, in time for the APEC Summit.

At the request of the PNG Government, the Chinese government is constructing the 1.1 kilometre long road from the Government Boulevard from the Parliament House to Waigani Drive and rehabilitate the 8.6 kilometre long Poreporena Freeway from the Stanley Esplanade to the Jackson’s International Airport.

The project is progressing well so far with 37.5 percent of the total work completed.

Take extra care along freeway: NCDC

Atasoa made the appeal following cases of near accidents on the sections of the freeway where work is currently undertaken.

“Firstly, let me apologise to the travelling public on behalf of the NCDC Board and management for any inconvenience the roadworks maybe causing at this time but I wish to also appeal to everyone for patience and understanding as work progresses,” he said in a statement.

“More importantly, I call on the travelling public using the Poreporena Freeway to take every care possible as work on upgrading the freeway progresses.”

Simple motor vehicle rule saves driver

The driver was driving along the Poreporena Freeway in Port Moresby when his truck, laden with sand, overturned.

According to St John Ambulance Chief Officer Matt Cannon, who was at the scene when interviewed by Loop PNG, the driver was lucky because he put on his seatbelt.

Though the driver sustained minor injuries, the truck suffered the brunt of the accident.

Cannon is appealing to all drivers to at least adhere to simple vehicle and traffic rules and be responsible when driving.

The cause of the accident is yet to be made known.
