Section of Poreporena Freeway opened

The first 1.2 kilometres of the Poreporena Freeway was opened yesterday by City Manager Bernard Kipit and contracting company, China Harbour.

The project started on April 1 and will be completed by the end of October, in time for the APEC Summit.

At the request of the PNG Government, the Chinese government is constructing the 1.1 kilometre long road from the Government Boulevard from the Parliament House to Waigani Drive and rehabilitate the 8.6 kilometre long Poreporena Freeway from the Stanley Esplanade to the Jackson’s International Airport.

The project is progressing well so far with 37.5 percent of the total work completed.

During the opening of the first 1.2 kilometre section of the road yesterday, it was also announced that the 4 kilometre section will be opened to the public in 4 weeks’ time.

Upon completion, it is anticipated to improve the traffic conditions of Port Moresby and present a better image of the city to the leaders, officials and business elites from the 20 APEC economies.

The project will continue to release sections of the roads for public use during the course of the construction.
