New Caledonia was too strong for the home team PNG, taking out the first set 25-18.

The visitors maintained the lead in the second set 25-17 with their strong attack and placement of the ball.

PNG fought back in the third set, covering up on spaces and blocking well to win the round 25-23.

Dominating possession for most of the first half, PNG eventually got a result in extra time through scoring machine Meagen Gunemba who fired a shot into the nets after a good cross from Georgina Kaikas.

The downpour did not help both sides especially Cook Islands who could not get past PNG's solid backline.

PNG got their second goal early in the second half after a shot deflected off the gloves of Cook Island's goalkeeper Marjorie Toru and onto PNG'S Fatima Rama who booted it in.

From this point, PNG turned to defence to steer them home to a 2-0 win.

Winning the toss, the Samoans went into bat first and got off to a bad start as the first 3 wickets fell in close succession for only 13 runs.

This brought to the crease, captain Regina Sela Monika Lili’i who momentarily turned their innings around smashing 30 runs.

But her dismissal brought about a batting collapse as the rest of the batting order all scored below 20 runs.

After the full 20 overs bowled, Samoa finished at 9/103.

PNG’s Tanya Ruma was phenomenal picking up 3/11 followed by Norma Ovasuru who finished with 2/8.

This was possible after Solomon Islands defeated Nauru late yesterday.

PNG will now take on Tahiti.

PNG has now won five gold medals in powerlifting in day one of competition.

In the women's 63kg Melissa Tikio (PNG) got gold, Sanimere Abariga of Fiji won silver and Delia Dabwido of Nauru settled for bronze.

And in the men's 66kg Staron Slade of Nauru spoiled the PNG party winning gold, while PNG duo Henry Kelo and Brown Bilong sharing the second and third placing.

But in the men's 74kg division, PNG had the upper hand over Nauru, collecting two medals.

Rew scored the first points of the game to get the crowd up on their feet roaring as he shrugged off several defenders to score.

The Solomon Islanders responded straight away via Solly Seuika to score out wide.

A successful conversion put his team in front.

Some razzle dazzle rugby saw Rew grab his second score of the match right after the half time siren sounded. With the kick in, the score was 12-7 at the break.

The second half belonged to PNG as two more tries went to Arthur Clement and Butler Morris just on full time.

Five tries to PNG was the tale of the tape as they did it easy over a Tahiti side that was no match.

Bomai racked up 6 points converting three of the five tries.

In the second half is when Bomai grabbed her two tries one after the other.

The kicking responsibilities were left to Kymlie Rapilla who added the extras for both tries.

Alice Alois grabbed the last try for PNG in what has been PNG’s easiest win yet.

But PNG’s acid test will come tonight when they play Australia tonight at 8:30pm.

With Tahiti ahead throughout the match, PNG bounced back in the final quarter thanks to Gabriel Elavo’s five three point shots helping PNG up with 15 points.

Tahiti took the lead in the first quarter 20-13 with the help of captain Ariitimarau Meuel and Rahitiarii Teriierooiteral and maintained their lead in the second quarter 36-34.

With their home crowd behind them, PNG pushed their way through the third quarter but were still trailing by three points as they tried to close the gap 57-54.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola confirmed this in an email to the Fiji Sun newspaper.

“Has the PNG government handed the rest of the $50million Kina it had promised to the Prime Minister?”

Ratu Inoke’s reply was – “Not yet.”

“The first installment was provided before the elections and as promised the next would be in 2015,” he said. 

As of yesterday, he said the promised amount had yet to be received.
