PNG finish third at OFC Championship

Our girls claimed third spot behind Fiji and winners New Zealand after their 1-1 draw with Samoa in the last match of the Championship yesterday.

PNG were given a 12-0 beating on day one but bounced back with a 7-0 win over New Caledonia three days later. PNG continued their winning ways on match day three, brushing off Tonga 4-1.

PNG were handed their second loss at the hands of their Melanesian counterparts Fiji, going down 3-2.

PNG to play Samoa tomorrow

The match will kick off at 3pm (1pm PNG time) at Ngahue Reserve - Field 2.

In other matches, Tonga will take on New Zealand while Fiji and New Caledonia go head to head.

From four matches, PNG have won two and lost two which has put them in third spot on the ladder.

The current standings:

New Zealand (12), Fiji (7), PNG (6), New Caledonia (6), Samoa (2), Tonga (1).

PNG beat Tonga 4-1

The Tongans struck first in the 6th minute with a counterattack that saw Mele Kafa power a shot into the back of the net.

PNG regrouped and equalised in the 20th after a perfect through ball from Ramona Padio that found the boot of Selina Unamba who did the rest.

Padio then gave PNG the lead right before the break slotting one past keeper Mele Akolo to make it 2-1.

PNG dominated the second half and scored two more times through Padio in the 51st and Nicollete Ageva in the 88th.
