Lorengau Magistrate fined K100 drink driving

Magistrate Francis Kalai of Buyang village in the Tetidu LLG, Lorengau District, Manus Province was fined K100 by the court last Friday, February 17.

A short trial was conducted under the Traffic Court jurisdiction and Kalai was convicted of one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of driving without due care and attention.

The court ordered a six-month suspension of Kalai’s driving licence.

Speeding fines not a deterrence

Assistant Police Commissioner for Traffic Jerry Frank informed PNG Loop that with the Motor Traffic Act coming into play leading to regular legislation the traffic fines should be raised to deal with the issue.

Franks says however that if the fines were to be increased to K1000 or more, it would force motorists to be accountable for their own actions and deter them for breaking the law which would lead to a  drop in accidents  on our roads.
