Kell Brook

Spence Jr: Peterson better than Brook

The IBF welterweight world champion makes the first defence of the title he took from the 'Special One', when he takes on Peterson in the Barclays Center, New York, on January 29.

Spence Jr will not have boxed for almost eight months when he takes on a former sparring partner, but 'The Truth' is expecting a tougher test than he got at Bramall Lane, when a serious eye injury forced Brook to retire in the 11th round.

"You're going to see the same Errol Spence that you're used to," said Spence Jr.

Brook beaten by Spence Jr

Brook sunk to his knees with his swollen left eye causing obvious distress, and referee Howard Foster called a halt to confirm Spence Jr as the new IBF welterweight champion.

Sheffield's Brook had previously suffered a broken orbital bone in his middleweight defeat to Gennady Golovkin last September, but his other eye resulted in his demise against Spence Jr who was ahead on all three judges' scorecards at the conclusion.

Brook inside weight limit

IBF champion Brook was 10st 6lbs 7oz on Friday, two ounces heavier than his challenger, and safely inside the 10st 7lbs limit before Saturday night's collision live onĀ Sky Sports Box Office.

Each fighter must now pass Saturday morning's check-weigh. They are permitted to add a maximum of 10lbs to their weights.

Friday's weigh-in represented Brook's first return to the welterweight division since gaining 13lbs to challenge Gennady Golovkin last September in his most recent fight.

Brook-Spence conference called

The Sheffield man is due to defend his IBF title against mandatory challenger Spence Jr and boxing fans are eagerly awaiting details about the welterweight clash.

Brook is stepping back down to the 147lb division after his courageous defeat to middleweight king Gennady Golovkin last September and will face a dangerous opponent in Spence Jr.
