International Women’s Day

Speaking on International Women’s Day, PM O’Neill said all women and men must take heed of the theme this year of “Be Bold for Change” and work together for gender equality.

“Today, in Papua New Guinea and around the world, we give thanks for the contribution of our mothers, daughters, sisters and all women in our communities,” the Prime Minister said.

“This is a day to not only recognise the achievements that have been made in advancing the rights of women, but most importantly to make greater progress.

PNG must call for change and celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of this country.

Since 1975, International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world on the 8^th of March. This year's

theme is Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50:50 by 2030.

The Women of Courage Award honours women who are making history in their countries and communities through their work to better their societies, to fight discrimination or strife, and to help resolve conflicts.

“Eligible candidates are women working in the political, human rights, economic, social, judicial, health, educational, press/media, peace and national reconciliation, and scientific and technological arenas,” the embassy said in a statement.
