Man dies after attack near airport

Police stepped in and stopped the attack but the victim passed away due to complications from the deep bush knife wounds he sustained.

Police report that the victim was chased by men believed to be from an enemy tribe who tracked him to the outskirts of the Goroka airport and brutally hacked him up with bush knives at about 5am.

Sergeant Joseph Puang says that the victim was saved by a police patrol who halted the attack and rushed  him to the Goroka Base Hospital where he was admitted in a bad condition.

Sergeant Joseph Puang in Goroka says that units are maintaining a vigil over the town area as well as the Genoka settlement  to keep an eye on opportunists who want to take advantage of the situation.

Puang tells PNG Loop that the police are making sure that the Goroka town returns to normal after the town ground to a standstill following the fighting that escalated from the settlement area where the two ethnic groups live.

Meantime by this afternoon the leaders of the two ethnic groups will be meeting with the police to broker a peace deal.
