Goroka fight: Police watching trouble spot

Goroka police are maintaining a presence in the town area following yesterday’s fights that escalated between Okapa and Unggai people.

Sergeant Joseph Puang in Goroka says that units are maintaining a vigil over the town area as well as the Genoka settlement  to keep an eye on opportunists who want to take advantage of the situation.

Puang tells PNG Loop that the police are making sure that the Goroka town returns to normal after the town ground to a standstill following the fighting that escalated from the settlement area where the two ethnic groups live.

Meantime by this afternoon the leaders of the two ethnic groups will be meeting with the police to broker a peace deal.

Leaders of the Okapa area will also be handing over the ten suspects that they have identified with regards to the killing of an Unggai man on New Year ’s Day that led to the fights yesterday.
