Gideon Kakabin

ENB loses passionate historian

Gideon Kakabin passed away yesterday in Canberra, Australia, after suffering a heart attack.

“The Rabaul Historical Society was saddened to hear of the passing of Gideon Kakabin,” Rabaul Historical Society secretary, Susan McGrade, told this newsroom.

“He was working on an ENB exhibition in Canberra. He had a heart attack last week, was revived and admitted to hospital ready for open heart surgery this Wednesday but he suffered another heart attack.

“This time he could not be revived.”

History is not boring, says writer

“How can something be boring when it really is a study of what we have done in the past?” added Kakabin, who is also the creator of the famous Facebook group, NGI Historical Society and Destinations in Rabaul.

He was speaking last month to history students of seven high and secondary schools in East New Britain during an open lecture with professional historian, Professor Hermann Hiery of the University of Beirut.

The presentation of the two open lectures was an initiative by Kakabin.
