EU commits to PNG rights issues

This commitment was reaffirmed by Ambassador Ioannis Giogkarakis-Argyropoulos at the opening night of PNG’s 8th Human Rights Film Festival. 

Ambassador Ioannis said human rights is at the very heart of the EU’s relations with countries and regions.  

“Please be assured that the EU will continue to support initiatives in human resource areas in PNG, and the formal abolishment of the death penalty remains an area of continuing and constructive dialogue with the PNG government,” he said.

He stressed on awareness among the public at large.

Last day of rights festival

The festival commenced on Friday with the theme ‘Look. Know. Act or Luksawe Na Kirapim Wok.’

Films are shown yearly to highlight human rights challenges faced nationally and internationally.

“In PNG, we have a very large inequality gap. Through the film festival, we hope to inspire you to consider some of the critical human rights issues that are impacting PNG today,” said Alithia Barampataz – festival director.

Barampataz said the program this year was heavily PNG focused.

Out of 17 films shown, 13 are made in PNG.
