EU commits to PNG rights issues

The European Union has pledged its continuous support to any initiative relating to human rights issues in PNG.

This commitment was reaffirmed by Ambassador Ioannis Giogkarakis-Argyropoulos at the opening night of PNG’s 8th Human Rights Film Festival.

Ambassador Ioannis said human rights is at the very heart of the EU’s relations with countries and regions.

“Please be assured that the EU will continue to support initiatives in human resource areas in PNG, and the formal abolishment of the death penalty remains an area of continuing and constructive dialogue with the PNG government,” he said.

He stressed on awareness among the public at large.

“So that behaviour changes are a result of a change in mindset rather than fear of punishment. Not because of a legal obligation but because we realise that we should change and the benefits of change,” he added.

The ambassador praised the efforts of the festival but he said while the festival was one way among others to reach the hearts of PNG, in particular the young generation, it certainly is not enough.

“We need to continue to try to change minds through other possible means and raise awareness, including through education.”
