“No Need For Guns During Elections”

“I believe that we should not be running election with guns, but in certain part of the country we would use force to control the crowd and protect our citizens to exercise their democratic rights,” Minister Onglo said.

He said this when referring to yesterday’s Post-Courier front page, stating that police were yet to purchase firearms for security operations as per a police procurement process.

Calls For Inclusive Electoral Process

This is according to a recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report on Global Population, with findings that show that about 15 percent of the world population live with some form of disability, the majority coming from developing countries.

As such, many are vulnerable and socially excluded, making it difficult for them to access economic opportunities and play an active role in society.

Election Preparations Underway

The Electoral Commission’s strategic plan, operational plans, and timelines, adhere to the electoral legal framework.

The Electoral Commission, the electoral authority, established under Section126 of the Constitution is tasked with organizing and conducting national elections and local-level government elections.

The Commission in a statement has confirmed that the preparation for the national elections this year is well underway.

Prayer For National General Elections

Body of Christ Churches Chairman, Rev. Ps Joseph Walters spoke to the leaders of the churches at the Tabernacle of Prayer Church, 6-Mile about the importance of prayer.

Pastor Michael Wilson said there have been mismanagement and corruption among leaders because wrong people are voted into parliament, but there is a best way to run the elections and the church believes they have the answer. 

“Our desire and our conviction is that with God we can do it better, with God things can go better,” said Ps. Wilson.

Political Parties Confirmed

The Registrar of Political Parties, Dr Alphonse Gelu, has said that in recent times his office has fielded queries regarding announcements by certain organizations declaring themselves as political party entities, launching and having rallies.
 
“The Registrar of Political Parties is mandated to oversee the administration of all registered political parties. Only this office has the true and correct records of all registered political parties.
 

TIPNG Concludes Lae Awareness

The team visited a couple of schools in Lae, with their primary focus on equipping first-time voters with the right information.

Transparency International PNG’s project called ‘Building Elections through Partnership’ has seen them work closely with the PNG Electoral Commission and other key partners to deliver voter education awareness prior to the 2022 National General Elections.

Project lead, Alice Areori, said they have been conducting civic awareness on the elections since 2021, starting in East New Britain Province.

Sinai Updates On 2022 NGE

Commissioner Sinai made several significant announcements, among these, the appointment of the National Broadcasting Corporation PNG as the official broadcaster of the 2022 National General Elections.

Caritas Launch Voter IEC Materials

The Information Education and Communication (IEC) material, which were produced for the public, are targeting mainly the youths and women especially those in the rural areas to prepare them for a free and fair elections 2022 without fear or favour.

Police Ready for Elections

This was the conclusion made by the various divisional and Provincial Police Commanders when they presented the overview of their supplementary orders to the Police Commissioner’s General Orders at the national election security planning conference. The conference was held in Port Moresby recently.

The NCD/Central Commander Assistant Commissioner, Anthony Wagambie Jr said during his presentation that the constabulary is prepared and ready to deliver the 2022 National General Election with experienced senior officers, who have taken part in previous elections.

Sinai Appointed Electoral Commissioner

The Electoral Commission Appointments Committee (ECAC) has approved the appointment of Mr Sinai as the Electoral Commissioner.
 
Prime Minister, James Marape and ECAC Chairman said the ECAC has approved to advise the Head of State to appoint Mr Sinai as the Electoral Commissioner for four years or until he reaches 60 years of age. Whichever occurs first, effective from 1st December 2021 and directed the First Legislative Counsel to prepare the necessary instruments of revocation and appointment of Mr Sinai as Electoral Commissioner for gazettal.
