Annual charity rugby focuses on prostate cancer

A record number of 11 teams turned up today for the annual Fiss-Potts Rugby 10s Tournament at the Sir John Guise stadium.

The aim of this year’s charity event is to raise funds to support work on prostate cancer.

The charity rugby tournament, which started in 2016, is an initiative of the Port Moresby Fiss-Potts Club.

The charity association, registered under the Investment Promotion Authority, aims to support charitable causes within the community through rugby.

“We started off in 2016 with 6 teams. Last year we had 9 teams and this year we have 11 teams so the interest is growing,” said Jack Kariko, President of the POM Fiss-Potts Rugby Club.

“It’s social rugby. We want to make it a fun day for those of us who used to play rugby before – the over 35s, over 40-year-olds, the pot-bellied and all that.

“We want to encourage that group of people to get out and be active and live a healthy lifestyle.

“We want to be able to send a message out there that you can have fun, be active and also support a worthy cause.”

Kariko further said the Fiss-Pots have been participating in the Manila Fat Boy Rugby Tournament in the last 4 years, where funds raised there go towards the assistance of orphanages in the Philippines.

Though predominantly a male event, the club is slowly seeing a growing interest in women’s teams.
