Ballot papers arrive in Manus

Ballot papers for the 2017 National General Elections have arrived in Manus for polling.

Manus Police Provincial Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, said two small Australian Air Force aircraft arrived in Manus on Saturday with the ballot papers.

The ballot papers were received by Electoral Commission staff with heavy security escort from the Joint Security Forces at Momote.

The ballot papers are locked up in the storage container at the Police Station and PPC Yapu said tight security will be provided until June 23, where they will be moved to the respective polling venues.

Meanwhile, PPC Yapu has commended candidates and their supporters for the peaceful campaign so far and wants that to be continued until they go into polling on June 24.

He said common sense must prevail and the Manus people must take ownership of the election to vote for good leaders to represent them in Parliament.

PPC Yapu said his Joint Security Force personnel are already out providing security for the 2017 National Election, to ensure the conduct of the election is free, fair and safe; where voters can exercise their democratic rights to vote without being influenced.

He said the practice of buying votes for money and other goods is illegal and corrupt and denies the voters’ right to vote for their leaders at their own choice.
