UPNG needs K12m to start classes

The University of Papua New Guinea will only recommence its 2016 learning and teaching calendar when the National Government allocates the K12 million funding promised.

Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Mange Matui speaking on TV Wan ‘Nau’ talkback show said the additional funding and improve security on campus was the reasons for the UPNG Council to lift the termination of the 2016 university calendar.

“The government must put that money into the University of Papua New Guinea account in order for classes to start on the 5th of September,” Professor Matui said.

“Let me make it absolutely clear that the money is very important because right now the university is getting its funding on a monthly basis, unlike previously where they give us three months in advance and university had the opportunity to plan for its activities within these three months.

“We need the K12 million, not in installment, for us (UPNG) to resume the semester, there is no two ways about it because we have scheduled the academic year into December and starting early in January that is why the need for money is urgent.”

The 2016 calendar will end in March 2017.

The additional funding was announced by the National Government to the three state run universities to help them extend their 2016 calendar and its separate from the 2016 budgetary allocation.

The University of Goroka have already started classes and Unitech will soon resume.
