Major learning event for farmers

Leading farmer organisations in Papua New Guinea will meet in Lae for a major learning exchange program next month.

The initiative is organised by the Fiji-based Pacific Island Farmer Organizations Network (PIFON) in consultation with the Charles Darwin University in Australia.

The Australian Women in Agriculture group will deliver the two-day program, from October 19-20, which will be hosted at the National Agricultural Research Institute’s Bubia campus outside Lae.

The event will bring together PNG’s farmer organisations, regional farmer organisations, and public and private sector partners to discuss the successes and constraints of farmer organisations.

The PNG Women in Agriculture Development Foundation (PNGWiADF) will be a major partner in the exercise, which stands to attract a huge number of its members.

PNGWiADF president Maria Linibi said leaders in agri-business and innovative agriculture will have the opportunity to share their experiences and challenges; and develop new networks and identify new opportunities to work together in the interest of improved agriculture development.

She said the program will extend into a women’s leadership training for PNGWiADF’s members for another two days.

The participants will also have the opportunity to attend the popular Morobe Agriculture Show which falls on the weekend (October 24-25) of that week.
