World Environment Day

This year’s campaign is #BeatPlasticPollution.

CEPA’s scientific officer, Shirley Mole, iterated that they are collaborating with their partners to come up with ways to mitigate plastic wastes in Lae.

“We know plastic is an issue in the industrial sectors and we are trying our best to promote the theme ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’.

“The other thing is we also have a regulation in place. It’s about the biodegradable plastic use regulation.

The response has been encouraging and the team has gone out to various schools and supporting corporate houses, planting 1,009 trees for World Environment Day on June 5, 2022. 

Port Moresby Nature Park’s horticulture team, with the supervision of its Team Leader Junior Muli, managed to successfully carry out tree planting activities throughout the week to five schools and two business houses. 

“Schools are always chosen for this particular program with the view that children are the future of the nation,” said Muli. 

The group planted more than 200 mangrove shoots at Pikinur along the airport runway, in celebration of World Environment Day. 

General Manager Randy McMahon and Acting Environment Manager, Faith Angoro acknowledged the effort of the employees in honouring St Barbara’s commitment to respecting the environment through the activity, while emphasising the important role of mangroves in the ocean’s ecosystem.

This was to mark World Environment Day.

This event was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the European Union-funded Support to Rural Entrepreneurship, Investment and Trade Program (EU-STREIT) Program.

EU-STREIT Program Coordinator, Dr Xuebing Sun, explained the bleak status of the ecosystem because of pollution and other human activities and the need to rehabilitate for generations.

Under the theme, Driving Blue Recovery for a Sustainable Coral Triangle, the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) will be conducting several activities to mark the day.

According CEPA’s Executive Manager Marine, Yvonne Tio, PNG is in the epicenter of the coral reefs in the world and we are fortunate that we have these assets that we have to look after. 

The theme for this year’s WED is “Ecosystem Restoration” and CEPA is focusing on terrestrial/Forest ecosystems and marine ecosystems conservation through their Sustainable Environment Program (SEP).

CEPA Deputy Managing Director, Dilu Muguwa said last year, Minster for Environment and Climate Change Wera Mori launched the “ten Million trees in Ten Years” tree planting Initiative, which supports the planting of one million trees per year, an initiative that supports this year’s theme.

The event is part of activities that have been organized by Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) ahead of World Environment Day that falls on June 5th.

The first-of-its-kind forum will utilized for sharing experiences, insights and build collaboration amongst all stakeholders in the battle against climate change.

Under its ‘Amazing Port Moresby’ banner, it is promoting the restoration of ecosystems through the hashtag #generationrestoration.

NCD Governor and the National Capital District Commission remains at the forefront of this campaign in partnership with significant stakeholders including the Ministry for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, CEPA, CCDA, UNDP, National Forest Authority.

To continue the campaign, Indian High Commissioner to PNG, His Excellency Vijai Kumar, United National Resident Coordinator Gianluca Rampolla, Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko, Motu Koita Chairman Dadi Toka Jnr and representatives from the business community and city residents joined Governor Powes Parkop who led the city to take actions and to recommit to save the environment.

They took turns in planting 20 Kwila trees on June 5^th at the foreshore of Idubada to Kanudi.

The campaign was launched on Sunday, June 02, with other two initiatives. 

The campaign was launched on June 2^nd to tackle the critical issues such as stopping open burning, understanding the importance of trees and forests, avoiding the use of plastic materials, recycling and reusing, supporting wildlife efforts, conserving water and participating in drain as well as river clean up.
