New UNFPA representative welcomed

A national of Kenya, Sambuli’s experience spans about 36 years, having worked with UNFPA in various capacities in Kenya and Liberia, as Deputy Representative in Ethiopia, South Sudan, and most recently as Representative in Eritrea before arriving in PNG in July.

Minister Maru expressed to the new UNFPA Representative that our first priority is the Papua New Guinea Census 2020, and that PNG will need technical support to deliver this national event successfully as Government does not want to see a repeat of the failures of the last Census.

‘Choice’

This is the key message captured by the United Nations Population Fund in their 2018 flagship publication.

The publication outlines the long term effects of choices and how it impacts fertility rates, family sizes and child spacing, amongst others.

Family size is closely linked with reproductive rights, which in turn are tied to many rights including the right to adequate health, education and jobs.

Health dept receives medical supplies

The supplies are purposely for earthquake affected provinces of Hela and Southern Highlands.

The supplies also include medicines for the response to and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and rape, family planning kits such as male and female condoms, oral contraceptive pills and implants at the value of US$ 1.75 million.

The reproductive health kits include medicines and disposable items for conducting safe and clean deliveries for pregnant women through skilled birth attendants.

Plan aims to tackle gender-based violence

According to statistics, two thirds of Papua New Guinea’s female population have experienced some kind of gender-based violence in their lifetime.

Stakeholders partnering with the government have come up with a strategic framework which can identify platforms and avenues to minimise, if not eradicate, gender-based violence in the country.

United Nations Population Fund representative Koffi Koume, during a recent gathering, highlighted the need for a framework strategic approach that can ensure that this dire issue is addressed.

US withdraws funding for United Nations Population Fund

The state department says the agency supports or participates in a programme of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilisation in China.

But the UNFPA says this is an "erroneous claim", and that its work does not break any US laws.

In total $32.5m (£26m) in funds will be withdrawn for the 2017 financial year.

This is the first of the promised cuts to US financial contributions to the UN by the Trump administration.

The UNFPA, like other UN agencies, is funded by governments voluntarily.

PNG urged to acclaim and reward midwives

Today (May 5 2016) marks International Day of the Midwife with the theme “Midwives: health heroes for women, adolescent girls and newborns!”

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) executive director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin in a statement said they’re committed to working with countries to strengthen midwifery skills and capacities.

Osotimehin said we must reward midwives who are working in challenging and hard-to-reach areas, where their services are most needed.

He said midwives are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
