One killed in Japan as typhoon approaches

A man in his 40s was killed in an overturned car early on Saturday (local time) in Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo, where high winds were reported, according to public broadcaster NHK. Four people were injured, also in Chiba, as winds blew roofs off several houses.

Super Typhoon Nina slams into central Philippines and cuts power

Nock-Ten, known locally as Typhoon Nina, brought strong winds and heavy rains and cut power and mobile networks, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, weather officials and radio reports stated.

Typhoon lashes Hong Kong

Winds of up to 145 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) were reported in some parts of the city, according to the Hong Kong Observatory, which also warned of the potential risks of flooding.

More than 180 flights to or from Hong Kong's airport were canceled, and bus, tram and ferry routes suspended.

The Observatory said Tuesday morning that Nida had "weakened into a severe tropical storm and is moving gradually to the inland areas of Guangdong."

Fossil fuel companies face national human rights complaint on climate change

They are calling for an investigation into the responsibility of big fossil fuel companies for fuelling catastrophic climate change that is resulting in human rights violations.  

The complaint, which is the first of its kind in the world, is being brought forward by typhoon survivors, advocates and non-governmental organisations, including Greenpeace Southeast Asia.

Storm warnings cancelled for Guam and CNMI

It says the Typhoon Watch has also been cancelled.

This morning, 9am local time, Tropical Storm Goni was 144 kilometres west of Saipan, 128 kilometres west of Tinian, 120 kilometres northwest of Rota and 168 kilometres north-northwest of Guam, packing 104 kph sustained winds. Tropical storm-force winds extend 120 from its centre.

Lead forecaster, Michael Ziobro, says Tropical Storm Goni will develop into a Typhoon either tonight or early tomorrow morning but it will be too faraway from Guam and the CNMI.

He says Goni is moving at 14 kilometres per hour.

The weather service says at 2pm on Friday local time, Tropical Depression 16W was over 571 kilometres east-southeast of Saipan, about 579 kilometres east-southeast of Tinian and Rota, and about 611 kilometres east of Guam.

Tropical Depression 16W continues to move west-northwest at 12 kilometres per hour with maximum sustained winds are currently at 48 kilometres per hour.

A tropical storm watch means damaging winds of 62 kilometres per hour or stronger are possible within the next 48 hours.

Typhoon weakens over China after leaving 22 dead, missing

Typhoon Soudelor made landfall in China's Fujian province late Saturday night and was downgraded into a tropical storm as it moved across the region.

Rains from the typhoon triggered mudslides in mountainous Pingyang county in Zhejiang province, north of Fujian, killing nine people and leaving three others missing, the county government said.

The storm made landfall in Zhoushan, a city east of the port of Ningbo in Zhejiang province, dumping more than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain since late Friday, China Central Television and the Xinhua News Agency reported. 

Xinhua said no deaths or injuries had been reported by Saturday evening.
