Goods like rice, bread, lamb flaps, cartons of soft drinks and ham are selling fast at the shops, with just two days left before Christmas.

Loop PNG visited RH Hypermart, Stop N Shop, Brian Bell and TST Supermarket and witnessed a flood of shoppers in long queues at counters.

Almost all food stuff are on specials as well as white goods, toys and Christmas decorations.

The customers had to wait in line to collect the rice bags straight from the container at the back of the shop.

Even the PMVs were packed with passengers traveling to their villages along the Magi and Hiritano highways.

Loop PNG caught up with shoppers rushing to make it home on time for Christmas.

People were seen buying food stuff and presents to share with family, friends and loved ones.

Shops like RH Hypermarket, Stop N Shop and TST Supermarket have all seen an increase in customers this week.

For this week alone, they have had 3000 to 7000 customers every day.

The shops will operate during Christmas and Boxing Day.

With the quickest response time of all available terminals, the new Westpac EFTPOS promises to take the stress out of shopping and improve business for retailers.

Chairman Mahesh Patel when commenting on the announcement said 2015 has been another tough year for the company.

“Our revenue growth started well in the first half, but was stifled in the second half due to the fire at Waigani Central, our largest volume outlet.

“Our new growth plans which incurred increased expenses were severely impacted due to the reduced volume from Waigani, a serious market slow-down and reduced consumer spending in the second half.”

LOOP PNG visited several major supermarkets today still with empty shelves and disappointed customers.

These include the CPL’s Stop N Shop, Food World and RH Supermarkets.

Central Waigani Stop N Shop Assistant Manager Julius Koriu said the stock they brought in last week lasted less than a week.

He says CPL buys onions from local farmers in Simbu Province and has it transported to Port Moresby via PNG Air.

Boroko Food World ran out of onions last Wednesday, their stock lasting only a day also from local producers.

Both K50 grand stand and K25 outer stand tickets have sold out as of this afternoon at three of the seven Stop N Shop outlets including Town, Badili and North Waigani.

According to shop assistants, a few hundred tickets are still available at only Central Waigani and Rainbow outlets.

The National Events Secretariat confirmed that tickets must be only purchased from Stop n Shop with all proceeds going towards children’s hospitals throughout PNG.

Tickets and bags will be checked for the safety of all visitors and gates will open at 2pm and close at 4:30pm.
