Article 50: May signs letter that will trigger Brexit

Giving official notice under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, it will be delivered to European Council president Donald Tusk later.

In a statement in the Commons, the prime minister will then tell MPs this marks "the moment for the country to come together".

It follows June's referendum which resulted in a vote to leave the EU.

Mrs May's letter will be delivered at 12:30 BST on Wednesday by the British ambassador to the EU, Sir Tim Barrow.

China sees potential in PNG Table Tennis

 

Consular of the Chinese Embassy in Port Moresby, Wang Gengshen said China is a super power in table tennis and he hopes that one day PNG can have a world class athlete to compete against them and other world champions.

“China is the best in the world in Table Tennis and with our skills and experience we can be able to support PNG athletes and coaches through exchange programs and training,” said Gengshen.

Internal connectivity must be agenda

National Research Institute Director, Dr. Charles Yala, said this on Thursday (March 16th) during the 2nd Sub-Regional Workshop on Connectivity Development in Port Moresby.

Yala said the challenge for PNG was to rethink and reshape the country’s trajectory after 40 years of mismanagement of the country’s windfalls in the past.

He said to achieve this was to open the country to the rest of the Southwest Pacific through internal and external connectivity.

PNG go down to NZ in stoppage time

Over 1,000 spectators turned up to watch the semi-final at Stade Mahina in a nail-biter that finished with Oliver Whyte breaking PNG hearts by scoring in the 94th minute of play to win 2-1.

New Zealand were one up in the third minute when PNG’s Aben Pukue attempted to clear a cross but found the back of his own net.

But PNG equalised through Barthy Kerobin to end the first half with the score at 1-1.

Both sides were neck and neck in the second half and the match looked certain to end in a draw.

PNG beat hosts Tahiti 2-1 at OFC U-17 Championship meet

Tahiti took a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the first half when an unmarked Eddy Kaspard fired one past PNG’s keeper Graham Berigami.

Kaspard came close to scoring his second just minutes later when he attempted to head the ball into the nets from a cross.

Both sides battled on and went into half time with Tahiti still in the lead.

It took 71 minutes for PNG to finally get on the board through the boot of Jonathan Allen who equalised and put PNG right back in the game.

PNG to take on Tahiti in U17 championships

PNG went down 3-2 to New Caledonia in the round one match last Saturday and then settled for a 3-3 draw with Vanuatu on Wednesday this week.

The match will kick off at 7pm local time (3pm PNG time, Saturday)

The Group A standings:

New Caledonia (4), Tahiti (4), Papua New Guinea (1), Vanuatu (1).

The Group B standings:

New Zealand (6), Fiji (4), Solomon Islands (1), Samoa (0).

The OFC U-17 Championship will run from February 11-24.

PNG draw with Vanuatu at U-17 OFC Champs

PNG were first on the board in the 16th minute of play when Aben Pukue struck one past Vanuatu’s keeper, Joshua Willie.

Vanuatu hit back not long after when a mix up in the box allowed Dilland Ngwele to equalize.

PNG were one up again right before the break when a penalty awarded saw Barthy Pukue fire through his side’s second goal of the match to take PNG to a 2-1 lead at half time.

But the score was level again in the 55th minute thanks to the boot of Abert Vanva.

Iranian refugee in Fiji deported

Loghman Sawari was taken to the Nadi International Airport Departures Area after police and immigration intercepted the vehicle he was in with his lawyer, Aman Ravindra-Singh, this morning.

The pair were to meet with the Immigration Director Nemani Vuniwaqa.

Mr Sawari was taken into immigration custody just after 7.30am local time.

Fiji Village reports Mr Sawari came to Fiji on a PNG passport and his Immigration Arrival Card had misleading information.

He is a declared refugee in PNG.

7.9 quake near Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea

An alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) says widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible for parts of the Pacific.

Areas issued tsunami warnings include Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea , Pohnpei , Vanuatu , Chuuk, Indonesia, Nauru and Kosrae.

Initial reports suggest the earthquake struck at a depth of 154km.

The quake was initially recorded at 8.0M.
