Foreign-owned businesses dominate exports: Report

It is also known that the PNG export businesses have been dominated by foreign-owned multinational businesses, says a National Research Institute Discussion Paper No. 207 on “Barriers to internationalization of indigenous-owned micro, small and medium-size enterprises in PNG.

The National Research Institute today released the Discussion Paper written by Joseph Muniu, Francis Odhuno and Dianah Ngui that provides some insight into why the country's MSMEs are not engaging in export business as expected.

Building strong sub-national economies

The seminar takes a look at the Decentralisation of Powers and Functions for 22 Sub-national Economies. Prior to Independence and after Independence, have seen that the coordination and delivery of services in the provinces has shifted over time.  

The departments and agencies have shifted the attention to the provinces to raise their own funds, provide extension services, provide advisory and training services to develop bottom-up planning and policies and determine and deliver the province’s own economic programs to deal with the populace.

Address challenges coffee growers face

The challenges must be addressed to move the country’s coffee industry forward into the future.

The National Research Institute (NRI) Spotlight Volume 16, Issue 9: “Prospects of coffee production and initiatives for addressing challenges faced by coffee growers in Papua New Guinea” by Associate Professor Eugene Ezebilo, the Deputy Director for Research at the PNG NRI highlights the opportunity for coffee production in PNG, challenges that coffee growers in Eastern Highlands, Western Highlands and Morobe Provinces face and some potential ways to address the challenges.

PNGNRI & DataCo collaborate in cybersecurity research

PNG NRI has started National Security and International Relations Research Program last year, headed by Dr Olubenga Ige, to do research into cybersecurity, as this is a looming issue.

In a meeting with DataCo Information and Communication Technology (ICT) General Manager (Cloud and Data Centre) David Mba and Dr Immanuel Jigo – a PNG born cybersecurity expert from the US who is also a consultant to DataCo; the two institutions are looking at signing a Memorandum of Understanding for this collaboration.
