Newcrest CEO Visits New Ireland

Biswas was in town to meet New Ireland Governor, Sir Julius Chan, enroute to visiting the Newcrest Mining Operations on Lihir Island.

He was greeted at the airport by the Moxokore Clan of Lamusmus, having previously been inducted into the clan in 2015.

Biswas and the clan maimai (chief), Joe Lumaris, presented each other with mies – the traditional shell money from New Ireland Province. The exchange signified and strengthened the cultural ties between the Marauli (Moxokore) Clan and Biswas.

Working Together To Spread The Word

They have joined hands with the Nimamar Local Level Government, New Ireland Provincial Health Authority (NIPHA), National Control Centre (NCC) and the Department of Health (NDOH).

A combined medical team from the NCC for COVID-19 from Port Moresby and NIPHA were in Lihir recently to conduct advocacy and awareness about the COVID vaccines.

The company has been working with all arms of government – the Nimamar Local Level Government, the New Ireland Provincial Health Authority, the National Control Centre and the National Department of Health.

Workers Protest Mine’s COVID Measures

The measures, according to a media release, are aligned with and reinforcing PNG Government directives and measures to keep its workforce and contractors safe.

“At Newcrest Mining Lihir, the health and safety of our workforce is our priority – it is like wearing Personal Protection Equipment and going to work every day,’’ Mine General Manager Johan Labuschagne said yesterday.
