Rugby unions concerned over proposed inter-city comp

While welcoming the concept, the two rugby unions said that PNGRU should get its planning in place before running the competition.

“The concept is good, but just requires proper planning, accurate budgeting, and alignment with the stakeholders,” said Capital Rugby Union President Kori Chan.

“In their plan, they intended to roll out this competition in 2024 (expression of interest to clubs starts January) and competition starting in June and end in August. So hardly any notice or proper workshop with Provincial Union Presidents.

President Kamiak said ESS Tenth City Lights, NGI Honibrooks Harlequins, Irok Pirates and Royals have the upper hand battle in the top four premiership challenge heading into knock outs with bigger match results expected.

Invitational Challenge talks confirmed

Discussions have already begun. The challenge is expected to be held in Lae once this is finalized. At present, both have rugby competitions to complete. 
 
Morobe Rugby Union President Lionel Kamiak confirmed this at the recent SP Sports Awards, when Morobe Hammerheads were announced winner for Best Performance of the Year 2022.

Kamiak said it would be a big showdown because the best in the competition will go up against a quality opposition.

The 7s competition which ran for three weeks will conclude with the top six teams playing off for the Cup, Plate and Bowl including major cash prizes.

Lae Rugby Union President, Lionel Kamiak said after three entertaining weekends of 7s rugby, the top six teams go into the quarter finals before the cup play-off on Saturday.

The top six finalists are Citylights, Defence, Jokers, Pirates, Kabrats and Termites. 

Kamiak said after the finals this weekend teams will prepare for the major Trans Highway 7s tournament, the John Rosso Cup due end of this month.
