IS conflict: Booby-trapped drone kills Kurdish fighters in Iraq

A Kurdish defence official told Reuters news agency that the drone exploded when the Peshmerga tried to pick it up after it had crashed to the ground.

The incident happened on 2 October, north of the IS-held city of Mosul.

IS militants are said to have tried to use drones to launch attacks at least two other times in the past month.

IS conflict: Turkey sends more tanks into Syria

The tanks crossed the border near the Turkish town of Kilis and journalists later heard firing and saw plumes of smoke rising on Syrian territory.

Civilians were seen fleeing as the Turkish military advanced.

Syrian rebels backed by Turkey said they had recaptured at least eight villages from IS in the area.

The tanks' advance was supported by artillery, targeting IS positions, Turkish media said.

The reports said about 20 tanks, five armoured personnel carriers and other armoured vehicles were involved in the assault.

IS conflict: Turkey-backed Syrian rebels 'take Jarablus'

The assault began at dawn when Turkish warplanes, tanks and special forces personnel crossed the nearby border.

Rebel commanders said most of the IS militants subsequently retreated.

Turkey says its intervention is targeting both IS fighters and a Syrian Kurdish-led alliance that is attempting to advance on Jarablus.

US Vice-President Joe Biden later confirmed the US had been flying air cover for the operation.

IS conflict: Manbij residents celebrate liberation

They have poured into the streets enjoying basic rights they had been denied for two years, including shaving off their beards and smoking.

US-backed Kurdish and Arab fighters fought 73 days to drive IS out of Manbij, close to the Turkish border.

About 2,000 civilians being used as human shields were also freed.

Reuters news agency spoke to a resident of Manbij who described a spot where people were beheaded. "For anything or using the excuse that he did not believe [in God], they put him and cut his head off.

"It is all injustice," he said.
