Public urged to wear masks

Deputy Controller Dr Daoni Esorom sent this message out to the public during the election period, as cases of the new Omicron variants BA.275, BA.4 and BAS continues to increase in globally.

"We are at a stage where the Omicron sub variant of BA.4 and BA. 5 are becoming more transmissible and as the potential to evade human immune system," Dr Daoni said.

He said with the low vaccination rates and testing happening in the country people must practice public health safety measures.

Four Counting Officials Arrested

Counting for the regional seat have been suspended since last night.

Candidates including Michael Kandiu, Steven Kilage, Sylvia Pascoe, Fred Yakasa, Andy Bawa, Robert Agen laid the complaint at the Boroko police station this afternoon.

The candidates alleged on the evening of Monday 18th, 153 votes belonging to candidate Michael Kandiu was removed from the tally count in ward 4 at count 2 and added to another candidate.

“This was a deliberate move by the official,” Kandiu said.

Maprik Electorate Elimination

As of this morning, quality checks were progressing for Maprik electorate for each LLG with elimination expected tomorrow. Five LLGs have completed their quality checks with elimination expected after Count number two later today.

The five LLGs of Maprik district are: Maprik Urban, yet for quality check; 2. Maprik Wora LLG also yet to check for quality, 3. Yamil Tamaui LLG is second LLG, currently doing the quality check after Albiges Mamblep LLG, which was the first to go into quality checks yesterday.

Maintain Peace In NGI: N’Dranou

Mr N’Dranou commended everyone in the region for the successful outcome of polling with no election related violence and asked for the same spirit to be maintained throughout.

He said all NGI Provinces are now in the counting period and believes the counting will also end well, however, he is concerned if this will be the same during the declaration period.

“I’m appealing to candidates to continue maintaining control over their supporters especially after the counting,” Mr N’Dranou said.
