Tertiary institutions to mark international sport day

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, recognised on April 6, will be a day of fun activities for participating tertiary institutions in PNG.

The event, to be hosted by the High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea, will embrace the power of sport to bring about change in our society today.

To be held at the Bisini Sports precinct, the event will see institutions in Lae and Port Moresby gather for a round of AFL 9s and mixed netball.

Event Coordinator, Cornelius Papau, said the objective of the event is to celebrate the power of sport to drive social change, community development and to foster peace and understanding.

“As a partner with the PNG University Sports Association in nurturing and growing university sporting activities around Papua New Guinea, we are glad to fully support International University Sports Federation (FISU) and Australian University Sport (AUS) in delivering its campaigns through UNESCO and UN proclamation events,” said Papau.

Papau said the program was first introduced by Kofi Annan in 2001 through the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP).

“Its mandate is to coordinate the efforts undertaken by the United Nations in promoting sport in a systematic and coherent way as a means to contribute to the achievement of development and peace,” said Papau.

Papau said institutions who have participated in previous events and are to confirm their participation in this year’s event are the International Training Institute, Don Bosco Technological Institute, IEA TAFE College, Institute of Business Studies and University of Papua New Guinea, while in Lae will be the Lae Secondary School, Malahang Technical College, ITI-Lae and PNG University of Technology.

Other schools willing to participate can contact Papau on email: talent.highperformancepng@gmail.com or call 754-987-84.
