Nominations for coach study tour open

High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea opened nominations for its PNG Coach Study Tour 2017 last Saturday.

High quality coaching is a significant factor in achieving sustained international success and quality performance at any international sporting event.

Continuing with the support through the MOU between the PNG Government and the City of the Gold Coast, HP Sport PNG is conducting a PNG Coach Study Tour which will expose selected coaches to international calibre applied coaching concepts, methods and techniques.

The HP Sport PNG Coach Study Tour is a targeted approach to support the future success of Papua New Guinean athletes at international sporting events and is a partnership between the PNG Sports Foundation, HPS PNG and National Federations.

“Aligned with our HP Sport PNG strategic goals 2016-2019 and our vision to be ‘Driving the Change for a Culture of Excellence’, the HP Sport PNG Coach Study Tour conducted on the Gold Coast will help develop our coaching capacity in PNG.

“We have opened the nominations to all National Federations to be a part of the Coach Study Tour that will involve exposing national coaches to the unique environments of elite performance,” said coach development coordinator, Patrick Ani.

He said the long-term goal after the Tour is to select eight coaches that will be offered an eighteen month coaches scholarship with HP Sport PNG.

He added part of their development will include recruiting and filtering information to aspiring young coaches within their sport and providing a pathway for coach development.

“Continuing with our strategies to build on the foundation we developed leading into the 2015 Pacific Games, we have a focus on the continual professional development of our local PNG coaches.

“We can develop athletes holistically but this takes the technical and tactical input from the coaches.

“This is a critical area of development which has not had much attention, with previously funding and services directed mostly towards the athletes. We must support those who create the performance culture and drive the daily training environment,” said Director, Aaron Alsop.
