Opposition calls for disaster report

Opposition Leader Patrick Pruaitch has called on the Government to release the report on the cause of the earthquake in parts of the Highlands region on February 26, 2018.

Pruaitch in a statement said the aftermath of the disaster has seen ongoing clan fighting, chaos, law and order issues in Hela and Southern Highlands provinces.

Pruaitch raised this concern as the Government’s report was due nine weeks ago.

He said the Government is yet to provide a clear account of the extent of damages and devastation and future plans for the people affected.

He said the Emergency Disaster Response Team, led by Dr William Hamblin, which operates out of the premises of L&A Construction, has been recorded as handling various sums of funding totaling up to K450 million.

Pruaitch added that much of the early spending by the Emergency Team has focused on removal of landslides at blocked roads with little done to provide food and water to desperate communities stranded in remote villages.

The Opposition Leader further reiterated that the Government is also yet to respond to his calls recently on the release on PNG LNG Project Development Levy to help Hela, Southern Highlands, Western and Gulf provinces.

He is calling on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to immediately update the nation on the current situation in the earthquake affected areas and to provide accountability for funds the Government has used.
