Former NCD Sub-urban chairman files for bail

The former chairman of NCD Sub-urban Rugby League competition who has been remanded at Bomana for the last two years will be asking the Waigani National Court for bail later this month.

Billy Aki instructed his lawyers to seek bail in court. Today he appeared before Justice Derek Hartshort for bail, however the bail application was adjourned to January 24 for hearing.

The State Prosecutor handling the case said the applicant was previously refused bail by the National Court and must show a change of circumstances to his detention at Bomana, since he was refused bail.

Aki previously sought bail on January 12, 2016 however bail was refused mainly over his security from relatives of his deceased wife taking revenge.

The court also refused bail then because there was no evidence produced in court to show him being denied access by the Bomana Correctional Institute to a hospital.  This was for the medical ground.

His lawyer will return to court in two weeks’ time to present arguments on another bail application he filed.

Aki has been committed to stand trial at the National court after the Waigani District Court found sufficient evidence against him on allegations he assaulted his wife on Dec 26, 2015 at the Kone Tigers oval.

This assault left her with serious injuries which she was hospitalized for at the Intensive Care unit at the Port Moresby General Hospital. She later died from her injuries.

He was arrested and charged with murder on January 5, 2016. He has been in custody since.
