Aki gets 12 years for wife’s murder

Aki was found guilty in May over the murder of his wife on 26 December 2015, at the Kone Tigers oval.

The former chairman was initially arrested and charged on 6 January 2016 with the wilful murder of Louisa Aki, on 26 December 2015.

He stood trial in the Waigani National Court and was found guilty of murder.

Aki assaulted his wife, who was from the Gulf Province, in full view of the public using a timber while under the influence of alcohol, at the Kone Tigers oval. 

Trial starts against former rugby chairman

The trial commenced yesterday morning against the man from Tambul, Western Highlands Province, before Justice George Manuhu.

Aki, who was charged on January 5, 2016, over the wilful murder of his wife, Louisa Aki, has been in custody since his arrest.

Louisa was from the Gulf Province.

The state alleged he assaulted his wife using a timber on 26 December 2016 at the Kone Tigers oval while under the influence of alcohol.

Following the assault, he allegedly took her home after she passed out.

Former NCD Sub-urban chairman files for bail

Billy Aki instructed his lawyers to seek bail in court. Today he appeared before Justice Derek Hartshort for bail, however the bail application was adjourned to January 24 for hearing.

The State Prosecutor handling the case said the applicant was previously refused bail by the National Court and must show a change of circumstances to his detention at Bomana, since he was refused bail.

Aki previously sought bail on January 12, 2016 however bail was refused mainly over his security from relatives of his deceased wife taking revenge.

Aki committed to stand trial

 Aki was committed to stand trial today after the Waigani District Court found sufficient evidence he killed his wife on Dec 26 last year at the Kone Tigers oval. 

On Sept 19, the court ruled it had enough evidence against Aki who was charged over the murder of his wife on January 5.

A section 96 statement was filed in response to the court's ruling.

After considering that statement, Magistrate John Kaumi ordered the committal of Aki's case for trial today.

He will next appear at the National Court for listing on Oct 31.

Aki and Ikasa case adjourned

Ikasa was arrested and charged after brutally attacking his girlfriend, Monica Naggy, on March 19 this year.

The decision was adjourned because of the bomb threat yesterday morning.

Another case involving prominent NCDC suburban rugby league official, Billy Aki, accused of killing his wife, was also adjourned to next Monday.

Most cases at the National and Supreme Court, including the District Court, were cancelled due to the threat.

Normal court proceedings will resume today.

A ruling is expected to be made today, Monday, Aug 29 at the Bomana court house after it was adjourned from last week. 

Arrested on January 5 this year and charged for the willful murder of his wife, 38 year old Aki is from Tambul in the Western Highlands province. 

He first appeared in court on January 7 and has been detained at Bomana since. 

It is alleged he assaulted his wife at the Kone Tigers oval in the view of onlookers following an argument on December 26, around 3pm last year. 

Ruling on evidence soon for Aki

A ruling is expected next Monday, Aug 29 at the Bomana court house.

Aki’s lawyers file for bail

His lawyers filed an urgent application before lunch today seeking bail, however could not move that application in court as the matter was not listed before a judge.

Aki’s lawyers are now working on getting the matter before a judge to hear it.

He made his first appearance on Thursday before Magistrate John Kaumi at the District Court sitting at Bomana.

From the Western Highlands Province, Aki was arrested early this week and charged for the alleged willful murder of a woman (his wife).
