Boroko market now a petty crime pool

Boroko Market is gradually becoming a breeding ground for criminal opportunists.

Residents along the Boroko Market strip of road and surrounding areas have complained about the increase of petty crime in the area.

Police in response to this calls said they are doing everything they can to curb this activities.

NCD Superintendent for Operations, Fred Tundu said there is also more assistance needed from NCD Authorities to help law enforcement crunch down on this illegal activities.

He said he understands that since the closure of the market in Gordons, most of the vendors have relocated which means what used to be experienced at Gordons prior to the move, is now being faced at Boroko and other markets as well.

He adds that police cannot always be at one market everyday as there is also Manu AutoPort, Waigani, China Town, Gerehu market and others that also need police presence to maintain normalcy.

“Men power is disseminated and which is apart from attending to other tasks like on-call cases, administrative runs and patrolling duties.”

He further adds that policing is not just the job of law enforcers therefore; more assistance is needed where possible.

Meantime, Tundu urged the public that if something illegal is taking place or they suspect that something bad is about to take place, alert others and do try to stop it.
