Secure ‘seif haus’

The security and safety of survivors used to be a key concern for the Buka Meri Seif Haus in Bougainville.

The building they operated out of was not secure and compromised the safety of clients and staff.

This changed when a permanent, secure facility was constructed on Bougainville Catholic Diocese land with support from the Australian government through the PNG-Australia Partnership.

Team leader, Joycelyn Talmits, says the quality of the facilities and secure fencing has proved a game-changer for the service, allowing staff to focus on supporting clients and linking them with essential services like the police, courts and counselling rather than worrying about their security.

“Previously we operated a rundown rental accommodation without secure fencing. This made it difficult for us to operate effectively,” said Talmits.

“This building is properly fenced and more secure. This allows us to focus on field work, connecting cases with other referral services.”

The numbers tell the story.

Since moving into the new premises, around 20 women each month are provided safe refuge; double the number of the previous facility.

In 2021, the service helped clients secure seven Interim Protection Orders (IPO’s), prohibiting perpetrators from contacting survivors or committing further acts of violence.

Talmits says not only are more women using the Buka Meri Seif Haus, but they are also accessing more effective services.

With the new premises being a safer space for women to stay for longer periods, it has enabled victims to complete their sessions in a location they feel comfortable and secure. Previously, victims would be fearful their partners could access the insecure facility and pressure them to return to an unsafe environment.

Talmits began her career counselling at the Nazareth Centre for Rehabilitation, under the guidance of Sister Lorraine Garasu, and with support from the Australia government.

She says helping survivors is very fulfilling.

“I learn a lot each day from assisting different survivors. I learn how to improve my work. The help I give to support survivors is the encouragement and motivation to do my role.”
