World records at Swimming World Champs

Britain's Adam Peaty broke the 50m breaststroke world record for the second time in a day as he reached the final.

The defending champion won the semi-final in 25.95 seconds, becoming the first person to break 26 seconds and eclipsing his 26.10 in the heats.

Peaty retained his 100m breaststroke title yesterday.

Lilly King of the United States added the world title to her Olympic crown by powering to the women's 100 metres breaststroke title in world record time.

PNG swimmers learn from world titles

The mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay relay team of Ryan Pini, Tegan McCarthy, Barbara Vali-Skelton and Sam Seghers was  disqualified on the final day of the championships after Seghers broke early in the mixed 4 x 100m freestyle relay race.

But this did little to dampen PNG’s spirits as they had their say about the championships and what it has given them.

“It was a bit of a disappointing finish, but I guess that’s what happens from time to time. The good part about it was that we were all together for that final swim," said Pini..

McCarthy says World Champs has been a great experience

Swimming in heat two of the Women’s 50 Butterfly, McCarthy finished in a time of 30.27 seconds.

“It was just off my Personal Best so it wasn’t as I hoped it would be, but it was alright,” said McCarthy.

She said in terms of improvement from the Championships, she is now able to hold her stroke better for the 50 metres and push harder in the swim.

“It’s been a great experience. So nice to come from Papua New Guinea and come straight here and compete. It’s a really nice experience,” said McCarthy.

Seghers beats his own Pacific Games time

Earlier Seghers set a Personal Best in the Men’s 100m Freestyle.

Swimming in the heats of the Men’s 50m Freestyle on day 6, Seghers clocked a time of 23.46 seconds.

This beat his Pacific Games time of 23.78 seconds.

The news gets better for the youngster whose new personal best was 0.68 seconds off team-mate Ryan Pini’s national record.

“It’s a tiny Personal Best, I was hoping for faster. I took a breath at the wrong side but that’s all part of racing. You learn something new every day”.

PNG relay team set national record

The team finished in 4 minutes 13.90 seconds behind host nation Russia.

Ryan Pini got the team off to a great start and put the island team in the lead at 100m securing 56.38 seconds.

“With a home crowd and a loud noise, there’s always a little bit of nervousness and excitement. In terms of my time I was a little bit better than my time in the individual event which I aimed for,” said Pini.

Tegan McCarthy followed up with a Breaststroke leg in 1 minute 17.87 seconds. Next came in youngster Sam Seghers setting the team up for a strong finish.

PNG gaining good experience at World Swimming Champs

In the 100m butterfly heats, Tegan McCarthy finished fourth with a time of 1 minute 08.82 seconds; lowering the national record by two hundredths of a second.

“I tried to get out there really fast and hold my stroke coming back. It was a long hard race, but it was good to get out there and try to get a personal best,” said McCarthy.

Next was Ryan Pini who swam the 50m butterfly finishing with a time of 24.18 seconds .This was 0.41 seconds outside the national record that he set earlier this year at the Australian Championships.
