Wewak National Court

The Wewak National Court handed down the court decision to French William, of Western Highlands, on Thursday 18^th April.

First Constable William was arrested in 2014 for his alleged involvement in the murder of one Othoniel Kapris.

Investigations revealed that the male victim was beaten to death while being detained at the Maprik Police Station Cell block 1.

William had reportedly picked up Kapris and a group of others on the 14^th August of 2014, when he responded to a commotion at the Top Hill area of Maprik Town.

Former Wewak Police Station commander, Chief Inspector Sakawar Kasieng, of Sibilanga Village, Sandaun Province, was sentenced to seven years for arson, while four of his officers were convicted for raping a 17-year-old girl at her family home on 7 December, 2013; they were sentenced to 20 years in prison each.

Former PSC Kasieng spent four months in custody prior to being sentenced on Tuesday. He will now spend 6 years and 8 months in hard labour.
