Wobiro’s verdict to be known next month

The matter was listed for the court to give its ruling on the verdict of the three; however that was adjourned to July 22. The trial was held in Daru in April this year.    

Governor Wobiro, Dr Gumoi and May are facing identical charges of misappropriating funds totaling K7.9 million, charges that arose from counts of abuse of office, conspiracy to defraud and misappropriation of public funds.

On May 25, parties presented submissions on what should be the verdict of the trial.

Village showcases locally harvested food

Under the guidance of the Community Mine Continuation Agreement (CMCA) Middle and South Fly Health Program (CMSFHP), Kiru village has identified and planted a variety of food crops since 2015.

Kiru is located in the Suki Fly Gogo region in the South Fly District. The region is mainly swampland and waterlogged with the staple foods being sago and fish. However, last year, CMSFHP Health Promotion Officer Cyril Yama challenged the village to plant a variety of food crops which can give them a healthy, balanced diet.

5 policewomen to represent Western Province

The police women conference will start on Monday May 2, and will continue until Friday May 6 in Lae, Morobe Province.

The officers are Constable Junitha Bogatiwai, Probationary Constable Lina Gigmai, Probationary Constable Grace Pumuye, Constable Maria Naur and Sergeant Stella Waramanai.  

Sergeant Demas Tapea, who assisted in fundraising efforts towards his women's team to attend the conference, said he was proud to have them confirmed to attend.

Since the Mogulu area has a population of 6090, each person will have access to 300 grams of rice per day, which is expected to last for two weeks. Four people to a 20kg bag of rice. 

Digicel, through Digicel Foundation and its partners Ok Tedi Mining, Heduru Trust and World Food Program, with the support of the Western Provincial Government and contractors, Agility and Central Aviation, have since last week air lifted 110 tons of rice to the Nomad Mogulu corridor area. To date, 54 tons of rice have yet to be delivered.

However, reports from experts have indicated that water and food shortages remain critical in parts of Papua New Guinea, such as Western Province and Milne Bay Province, amid a prolonged drought.

A specialist in PNG agriculture and food, Dr Mike Bourke, explained that large parts of the south had still not had any significant rain since the drought began.

Dr Bourke, who is an honorary associate professor at the Australian National University, said the drought situation remained bad in Western Province where many remote communities remain malnourished.

Mobile testing for TB cases in Daru

Deputy Secretary for the Department of Health Dr Paison Dakulala said mobile testing will be carried out to diagnose people quickly and administer treatment.    

“Mobile diagnostics testing will be carried out in Daru.

“We are moving into active screening. Before we were challenged because we did not have the capacity to screen and hold persons on medication till cure.

He added that the Daru Basic Management Unit is a center of excellence to test people with TB.

Kiunga under siege after man shot dead

Unconfirmed reports from Kiunga say a disciplined officer  shot and killed a man, which sparked the public to run amok causing law and disorder in the township.

Reports received by Loop PNG say the Army has moved into key points in the town and blocked off roads leading into the town centre.

The Army has issued a lockdown of people in the town area with movement of people in and out of town restricted  until the all clear is given by the Army.

Chinese community aid Kiunga Hospital

The hospital received K125,500 from New Century Investment Limited, Niugini Pride Supermarket, Rainfox Trading, ZC Trading, Young Sing Trading and Unique Hardware, which amounts to the cost of a portable x-ray machine.

The hospital has only one x-ray machine that is stationed in the radiology department, thus making it difficult to move patients needing x-ray services from the wards to the x-ray room. The portable x-ray machine will greatly assist as it can be taken to the patient’s bedside to carry out x-ray screening and make vital assessments quickly.

K8 million to fight TB in Daru

This funding will be used by the National TB program to strengthen activities they have in Daru.

TB Manager Dr Paul Aiya says the TB situation on Daru is unfortunate but they are doing all they can to help cure people.

He says the money will be used to strengthen the TB ward at the Daru General Hospital as it is currently overcrowded.

The TB response team in Daru have set up four treatment posts through communities to make treatment closer and more accessible to people.
