WHP man fined for illegal use of department’s vehicle

Thomas Jimm Norrie was sentenced to two years in prison today however, the court fully suspended that sentence period, ordering him to pay K10,000 within six months.

He was convicted for stealing a Toyota Land Cruiser in 2011 while he was employed with the Department of Commerce and Industry.

Norrie used the Department’s money and purchased the vehicle, shipping it to Mt Hagen where he used it for a hire-car business.

The court was told Norrie used the vehicle from May 2011 through to the election period for election purposes at K300 per day.

NDA pleased with response to WHP Health Authority petition

The petition highlighted allegation of corruption and mismanagement at Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority.

NDA along with the PNG Nurses Association have expressed their appreciation and gratitude to Prime Minister Peter O'Neill who effectively responded to their petition.

O’Neill made the decision and directed that Chairman of WHPHA, David Guinn to step aside and that a new Board be constituted and assembled, and a new chief executive officer appointed by this 'new' Board.

Fatima parish celebrates 60th diamond jubilee

Fatima is a parish of its own that runs several institutions including four elementary schools, TVET, primary school, secondary school, and Seminary as well as Callan services.

A Three days celebrations is expected to draw a big crowd especially Catholic Church followers as since its establishment, this will be the first time the parish will get to host such an event.

The parish institution have produced exceptional and vibrant young man and woman to over addiction and abuse and have also produced who are now holding titles in the public and private sectors.

WHP and Jiwaka to fix major road link

Victims affected by the flooded river contributed  more than K10,000 to pay for the land for the new course of the river, while Anglimp South Wahgi MP Komun Joe Koim provided an excavator last week.

The flooding river took a new course and covered large blocks of coffee plantations, food gardens, homes and arable land in the Kindeng and cut off the Kindeng-Kondopina Highway for the last three years.

Koim hit out at the National Road Authority for failing to fix the section of highway which was washed away by the flooding river in 2013.

Tribesmen shoot father Mul-Baiyer

His adult son, who was sleeping in another house, heard the gun shot and broke through the house and ran off into the nearby bushes as his own tribesmen, who allegedly killed his father, pursued him.

Mul Baiyer Police Station commander Sergeant Las Punta says the incident had taken place in Sumunga village in  Mul-Baiyer District, in Western Highlands Province.

Mul-Baiyer district police quickly went into the community and intervened just in time after the killing

People of Western Highlands commended

Provincial Police Commander for Western Highlands Martin Lakari acclaimed residents for behaving responsibly and with respect and said that there were no major incidents during the festive periods.

The people celebrated by attending services in their churches and stayed away from public places like the main highway and towns.

The commander urged everyone to continue to uphold the rule of law and said that no one was above the law, even the law enforcers.

Kaugel Bridge collapses

The bridge went down when a truck transporting a crusher tried to cross it.

The truck and machinery belongs to Covec PNG Ltd, the construction company which was awarded the multi-million-kina road project between Tambul and Mendi.

Local youth Enoch Steven said the crusher was to be offloaded just after crossing the bridge where it will be stationed for the road project.

“But it happened that the bridge collapsed together with the floater and the crusher some metres away from where it was supposed to be stationed,” said Steven.
