Over 70 young men, women surrender weapons

People at risk of becoming involved in crimes including armed robbery, drug trafficking, burglary and petty theft were among the 72 who handed in 25 weapons including homemade guns as well as knives, significant quantities of drugs and home brewing gear in a series of surrender ceremonies within Popondetta recently. The weapons, drugs and equipment were collected by police for disposal and destruction.

Suspects arrested for unlicensed pistol

They  were  caught  by MS  11  from  Wabag at around  4.00pm along the Nanonda  Highway.

The MS 11 had been task to conduct police  road blocks  along the highway when they incepted the two suspects.

Assistant Commissioner for Police- Western Command, Martin Lakari said the  suspects  were apprehended have  all  been  detained  at Tari  police  cell  and  refused  bail.

They were formally charged on Wednesday for the alleged offence.

The unlicensed pistol is a Magnum, with Serial number: 1911A2 and is believed to be a US Army issued.

Huge weapons haul seized by Spanish police

It includes over 10,000 assault rifles, machine guns, pistols, revolvers, and 400 shells and grenades.

The guns and ammunition were seized in January during an operation against firearms trafficking.

Investigators also found an illegal workshop with machinery to manipulate and reactivate weapons, near Bilbao. Five people were arrested.

Cash amounting to 80,000 euros (£70,000 / $85,000) was seized.

The operation involved counter-terror police from Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and Gerona.

Massive arms surrender in Hela

The weapons included sixty homemade and ten factory made guns that were brought over as the amnesty period nears its deadline.

Two key warring tribal groups, from the Maia tribe in Emberali ward, took the lead and handed over their weapons in what was termed a ‘breakthrough for peace’ in the province.

Hela Governor Francis Potape, who was present with his provincial assembly members, said he will pursue the matter to ensure that a permanent police barracks is stationed at Komo to look after its gas area.
