Eagles To Adjust

The Mt Hagen side was mauled 48 – 20 by the Lae Snax Tigers during their round 1 clash in Lae on Sunday, June 6th.

Eagles coach, Billy Gau, said the team was testing the waters considering it was their first match of the season; a season that started quite late due to COVID-19.

“With the Wigmen, it’ll be a different game compared to the one we just played,” Gau stated.

Tigers Crush Eagles

Three minutes into the match and the Tigers’ centre, Roderick Tai, burst through the Hagen team’s line.

An unsuccessful conversion by five-eighth, Joshua Lau, left the points at 4-0.

Quickly regaining their composure, the Eagles outfit fought back, keeping the burly Tigers at bay until fifteen minutes in and their left winger, Moses Tali, deftly slipped past the hosts’ defense.

An unsuccessful conversion left the scores at 4-all until the Tigers’ halfback, Jamie Mavoko, dove past the Muruks’ try line five minutes later, easily pressing the ball down.

Tigers claw Eagles down

Leading 18-12 at the break with three converted tries by the tigers and two from the Eagles it was any body’s game for the taking in the second half.

When Eagles soar through the tigers defense with a quick unconverted try in the opening minutes of the first half, which changed the game to look the other way with the scores at 18-16.

But with a torpedo kick that left Eagles fullback fumbled the ball over, the tigers retaliated scoring their fourth converted try of the game to lead 24-16.
