More food aid planned for drought zones

Parts of PNG has been battling flooding in recent weeks but there is still a need for relief in the wake of the drought, which lasted until March after beginning almost a year ago in some areas.

The UN's resident co-ordinator in PNG, Roy Trivedy, said data appears to show thousands still face food security issues.

He said with help from other organisations like the World Food Program and UNICEF, they would shortly start delivering food and nutrition supplies, mostly in the Highlands but also to parts of Milne Bay.

PNG students invited to compete for US scholarship

This is a competition for students all over the world including PNG and is an initiative of the United Nations (UN) and Seton Hall University in the United States.

Finalists with the best ideas will win cash prizes and partial scholarships to attend Seton Hall University, a private Catholic school in South Orange, New Jersey.

The cash prize assists with the launching of the idea or creating awareness about SDGs.

World powers adopt UN Syria resolution to end civil war

The United States and Russian initiative, supported by a 17-nation group, foresees a rapid ceasefire in the almost five-year conflict and peace talks from next month.

If the plan brings Bashar al-Assad's regime to the table with the armed opposition, it will allow Russian and US-led forces to focus their firepower on the Islamic State militant group.

The Security Council met after the latest round of talks by the International Syria Support Group, which gathered in New York to renew its push for peace.

Nearly 1 million Papua New Guineans are living with some form of disability; each of whom will face barriers that prevent their equal participation in society.

PNG and Australia are working together to support disability partner organisations and the people they support.

The focus of Papua New Guinea’s revised National Disability Policy 2015-2025 closely matches this year’s International Disability Day theme: ‘Inclusion matters: Access and Empowerment of People of All Abilities’.

No country has yet achieved equality between men and women – UN human rights chief

“Very frequently, we see a preponderance of women experts on panels that discuss issues specific to women and children – as if such issues could not be of deep concern to men,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in his opening remarks to a panel discussion on gender equality held by the Council in Geneva.

“Conversely, discussions on situations of armed conflict, on counter-terrorism, on sanctions regimes, and on the death penalty almost seem as though they are reserved for men,” he noted.
