S-League is more competitive: Upaiga

“I think the Telekom S-League is competitive compared to our league back home.

“There’s a lot of football politics going on in PNG and suddenly the NSL in PNG has dropped in terms of its standard.

“A good number of us PNG boys have moved here [to the Solomon Islands] this season and we have benefitted as players but at the same time, I believe we have also helped in improving the standard of the S-League so I’m happy to have helped in this way,” he said.

PNG players making an impact in the S-League

There are currently six PNG internationals playing in the Telekom S-League this season spread across three clubs.

All six players have played key roles in ensuring that their clubs stay in the hunt for the desired top two spots that will enable them qualification for next year’s Oceania Champions League, and of course the Telekom S-League title.

PNG players boost S.I soccer

Gunemba became the latest overseas player to grace Solomon Islands’ semi-professional competition- the Telekom S-League, after signing with his new club at the start of round two last weekend.

The goal-scoring machine is not alone playing alongside former PNG national team captain, David Muta at the Henderson Eels.

The Kapuls forward made an impressive start scoring on his debut last Saturday in the Eels’ 6-1 thrashing of FC Guadalcanal at the Lawson Tama Stadium.
