Fire suspect also implicated in stealing

The suspect, who is also the divisional administrative clerk for the NCD / Central commander’s office, was at the scene when fire service arrived. She was later apprehended at her home by police who were tipped off by suspicious circumstances.

When police apprehended her, they found a substantial amount of cash alleged to be part of the K184,300 money that was taken off from the former NCD elections manager, Terrence Hetinu, during the polling period earlier this year.

Kalaut confirms fire was arson

In a media conference today, Kalaut said the fire started between 6 to 6:30pm yesterday evening.

The prime suspect who is also the administrative clerk was a caught in the blazing heat when fire service arrived at the scene.

Work has come to a standstill today for the office, as the fire has affected the commander's office, prosecutor’s office, the sexual offence squad office and the armed robbery squad office.

 

Details will follow shortly about the prime suspect and the motive behind the fire.

New police system to help prosecute cases

With the new cell management system (CMS), police are hoping that the alarming number of cases being struck out or dismissed in court will be a thing of the past.

The refurbished Boroko Watch House has installed the new management system, which will keep a record of detainees and their particulars, including statements, photographs and fingerprints.

Watch house boasts new upgraded facilities

The Watch House boasts a newly-refurbished sterile area, an exercise/sun bath booth, an interview room and a new Cell Management System (CMS), among others.

“The new cell management system will be used to keep track of all detainees with their particulars,” said NCD-Central Police Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, during the official reopening today.

“With this system, we are optimistic that it will help reduce the opportunity for unlawful release of detainees from cells.”

Gordon Police take on housing matters

This issue has been raised countless times with the latest being early this year and even late last year regarding the housing issue for policemen and women that are residing at the Gordon police barracks single quarters.

The barricade put up this morning at Gordon police barracks came about as an aftermath frustration of a fire that had almost taken place last Friday in the single quarters.

Police families moving to Bomana

This move comes after a barricade was put up at 4am today to protest the longstanding police accommodation issue in the National Capital District.

NCD/Central Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, said has no choice but to respond to the woes of his policemen.

A good number of families have already made their way up to the Barracks to claim their homes and clean up around the houses.

"We cannot wait any longer so we are going to make the move ourselves, given the okay by our good commander to move in regardless," says the wife of an officer.

Risking his job with Bomana decision

Commander for NCD/ Central police, Sylvester Kalaut, told the frustrated families this morning after they had barricaded the police barracks gate since 4am, stopping police vehicles from refilling at the police fuel pump.

“Since the General Election is approaching us, the policemen cannot sit back and watch their families suffer like this,” Kalaut says.

He said they were told that funding was from the government and not the Police department; it was beyond the control of the police management and hierarchy.

Central Province Police gear up for 2017 National Elections

Central Provincial Police Commanders, Laimo Asi said this upon presenting his 2017 election security plan yesterday to the Central/NCD Commander at Boroko Police Station.

PPC Asi said preparations for the conduct of elections went well in the previous elections. ͞

Police personnel will be on ground at their assigned location beginning with the awareness, campaigning, polling, counting and declaration and security will be divided equally to all districts, PPC Asi said.

One Suspect arrested and vehicles recovered in double murder

NDC/ Central Commander, Sylvester Kalaut says that incident took place between 9 and 10pm at the Kermadec Street flats just behind the Ela Beach Hotel.

As a result, two citizens were murdered; one was an employee of the State who was shot at point blank range.

The deceased was in his car driving into the flats drive way when the criminals followed in after him to where he parked and shot him in his chest killing him instantly.
