Fortunately, for Aumu village they have one teacher who teaches elementary through to grade 2. They also have a volunteer phonics teacher who gives up her personal time to ensure children of the village learn to read and write at a basic level.

The same cannot be said for Aivai’i and Kae-Varia. The village children are said to make long-distance trips by river, to and fro, to the nearest schools in other villages such as Evara.

Many choose to forgo the commute and remain at home, in the village.

UK extends support

The funding will be utilized to tackle anti-microbial resistance (AMR).  AMR is responsible for the deaths of 1.2 million people globally, making it a leading cause of death around the world, higher than HIV/AIDs and malaria.

The Fleming Fund programme in PNG, implemented by the Burnet and Doherty Institutes, has spent around K20 million since 2019 refurbishing human and animal health laboratories in Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Goroka and Rabaul, establishing strong AMR surveillance systems and training Papua New Guinean micro-biologists. 

UK supports Bougainville's future

High Commissioner Scott made the pledge when handing over K30,000 worth of brick-making equipment to the Ioro local community in Central Bougainville on 4th August.

The UK– funded equipment was handed over on the site of the Panguna mine in the presence of community leaders and landowners, and Theonila Matbob, Education Minister in the Bougainville Government and local member of the House of Representatives.

Support for Lae Community College

The items were presented by the Lae-based Niugini Good Samaritan Foundation, a non-profit organisation that builds partnerships with other groups to address development issues.   

Handing over the materials today was its president, Nera Kame, who outlined the low literacy rate in the country due to inaccessibility and lack of resources.

“We are basically supporting the education sector with the supply of books and other educational materials that can enhance the level of literacy in schools across Papua New Guinea,” said Kame.

Moresby South continues to assist MSME

Upon receiving acquittals, Tkatchenko stated that as an electorate it was the first if its kind initiative, especially monitoring and evaluation involving women's groups and associations.

"It is important to acquit because what we were given are public monies so we must ensure that the funds are used properly. We just couldn't give you the money alone. We made sure you received financial knowledge and literacy so you all knew how to look after your income and to spend the money properly. You need to know how to account for your money and bank your funds,” MP Tkatchenko said.

Atlas Steel PNG Supports St John Ambulances

As part of their corporate social responsibility initiative, Atlas PNG contributes K1000 to St John Ambulance from the sale of every full-kit home.

The funding support will go towards assisting the St John Ambulance operations in its response to medical emergencies across PNG.

St John Chief Executive Officer, Matt Cannon, who received the cheque donation thanked Atlas Steel PNG for the generosity of the sponsorship.

“We acknowledge and thank kindly Atlas Steel for their generous contribution to the ambulance service,” said Mr Cannon.
