24th SP Sports Awards a success

138 nominations were received this year for the 11 different categories.

Australian professional basketballer and sports icon, Lauren Jackson was the guest speaker on the night.

The awards on the night went to:

The news was announced by chairman of the sports awards organising committee, Andrew Lepani.

Jackson has played at the elite level for over 15 years which includes an extensive list of accolades spanning across several leagues including the Australian Women's National Basketball League (WNBL), American (WNBA), European (EuroLeage) and Asian (WKBL) Women’s Basketball.

Voting open for People’s Choice Award

The People’s Choice Award is the 12th category of the SP Sports Awards.

This is the third year running where voting is open to the public to vote to decide the winner.

Chairperson, Andrew Lepani said voting will run starting today and will close on June 1.

“Finalists for this award are from the top four categories- Male Athlete, Female Athlete, Team of the Year and National Performance of the Year.

“The public can text to 1610 and select your candidate by following the prompts. You can vote as many times as you want,” said Lepani.

SPORTS AWARDS ANNOUNCES 33 FINALISTS’

Chairman of the selection panel, Moses Koiri said 138 nominations had been received this year.

There are three finalists’ in each category:

Male Athlete of the Year:

2) Ryan Pini

3) Jack Viyufa

Female Athlete of the Year:

1) Linda Pulsan

2) Abigail Tere Apisah

3) Toea Wisil

Team of the Year:

1) Men's Touch Team

2) Women's Football Team

3) Women's Va'a V12 Team

National Performance of the Year:

1) Epari Souths of Pangia

2) Lae City Dwellers

Sports Awards nominations open

The Awards recognises the performance and achievements of Papua New Guinea athletes during the period January 1 to December 31 2015.

Similar to last year, there are 12 categories including Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, National Performance of the Year, Junior Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Best Sportsperson with a Disability and Sports Media Award.

Nominations can be submitted by anyone including national sporting associations, individual sportsmen and women, coaches, administrators, clubs, sports officials, the media and the public.
