The incident started from Gordon’s KMC all the way to RH Hypermart gate.

The acting NCD/Central police commander, Anthony Wagambie Jnr, said Boroko Criminal Investigation Division (CID) had followed intelligence reports and had gone to KMC Gordon’s where there was a planned armed robbery.

“The armed gang were using a white sedan; investigations will reveal if it is a stolen motor vehicle or not because there were a number of registration plates in the vehicle,” he said.

National Capital District Metropolitan Chief Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said the four suspects allegedly approached the Chinese man while he was sitting inside his vehicle waiting for his wife, who had gone into the market to buy fresh fish.

Two of the suspects walked over to him and the other pointed a homemade gun at the Chinese man’s temple and ordered him to get out of the car. The other suspect opened the passenger side door and pointed another homemade gun at the man.

The three robbery suspects were gunned down on April 2 while a fourth was seriously wounded on his leg following a gunfight with police.

Two of the men reside in Lae, one from Northern Province while the other from Morobe, and have both served time for various offences. 

The third, going by the nickname of ‘Whitey’ of Milne Bay and Madang parentage, had been on the run from Milne Bay police following a series of criminal activities committed in the province.

The deceased (identified), from Kabakaul, Kokopo, was allegedly part of a 5-man group that robbed a mobile phone shop on Saturday, according to provincial police commander Joseph Tabali.

“Five armed suspects held up a taxi driver and directed him to the Zero Mobile Shop, where one of them stayed with him while the other four went inside,” PPC Tabali tells Loop PNG.

While the customers were ordered to lie flat on the floor, the men held up the shop owner and gathered all mobile phones, tablets and battery chargers into a bag, then tried to escape.

This was the reaction from Anna Neistat, Amnesty International’s Senior Director for Research, to the shooting incident in the Australian Government-run refugee detention centre on Manus Island.

“More incidences like this are inevitable unless the refugees and asylum seekers are relocated to safety,” she said.

“We call for measures to ensure the immediate safety and wellbeing of all asylum seekers and refugees, including adequate medical care to those who may have suffered from damage or injury, and a prompt and independent investigation of this incident.

The shootout killed nine people plus three attackers, in a rare attack far from the jihadists' northern strongholds, Mali's defense ministry adviser said.

The four rescued U.N. employees were two South Africans, a Russian and Ukraine, said U.N. mission in Mali spokeswoman Radhia Achouri.
