POLICE PAY REDUCTION TO BE CORRECTED

Commissioner Manning said a technical error caused pay deductions that will now be paid to police members.

“The situation today where members received reduced pay is not good enough and we are sorting it out,” Commissioner Manning said.

“I have been advised by the IRC that the deduction was caused by the Alesco payroll system and is being resolved by the department of finance.

“This was a mistake that should not happen as it has hurt a lot of people.

Police officers warned

He made this comment after an off-duty police officer was detained at the Boroko Metro Cells after he allegedly damaged an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) at the Rainbow Stop and Shop on Monday, 8th of January 2024.

“Police personnel are accountable to the laws of this country and if they commit an illegal act they will be prosecuted,” he said.

“Just like any citizen, he has the right to a fair trial in the criminal court, but police who commits criminal acts will be prosecuted and sacked,” he said.

ATM criminals arrested

According to NCD and Central Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Anthony Wagambie Jnr, the four are now in custody at the Boroko Police Station, waiting for the internal investigations unit to gather information including CCTV footage before issuing charges against them.

Wagambie Jnr said the policeman will also be charged administratively for disgraced conduct in the police force.

He said the police officer was off duty during the cause of the incident.

Tsiamalili: No place for rogue police officers

Tsiamalili said those found guilty for misconduct in the police force will not only be dismissed but arrested and charged with criminal offenses.

He was responding to the recent report regarding the arrest of 116 former police officers last year, where 74 are now facing discipline-related charges.

He said if a member of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary commits a crime, they will be arrested, prosecuted, and subsequently dishonorably discharged from the Force.

Madang Police extend festive operations

Madang Governor Ramsey Pariwa said the exercise is being extended to ensure law and order issues are contained and managed well before they can cease.

Pariwa said the festive operation was successful. There were minor law and order matters that police were able to deal with immediately.

He commended members of the community for working with police to ensure the Christmas period was peaceful.

“I also commend police personnel and PNGDF personnel for working well together in carrying out policing services in the community,” he said.

Police Conduct Multi-Faceted Patrols

Following a comprehensive convoy, foot patrols, vehicle stop-and-search, and motorist patrols were implemented, revealing an increase in serious alcohol-related offences according to police records.

The public is urged to celebrate responsibly and avoid drinking and driving.

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika, accompanied by water police, carried out sea patrols along the Motuan coastline on Christmas day.

Police officers slapped with murder charges

Police officers Joseph Ronnie 29, Sebilen Saluai 32, Mel Taime 25, Wayne Tali 23, Christopher Tokana 34, Wanpis Bone 27 and Fredderic Seri 33 were all charged for murder under Section 300 Subsection 1 of the Criminal Code.

They appeared at the court this morning from custody for the alleged murder of 18-year-old Kimoli Dagoba on the 27th of November 2023 at Gordons, in what appears to be a police brutality case.

Officers trained to become Prosecutors

Comprising of eight Royal Papua New Guinea Police Officers and two lawyers from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, a total of 10 officers have undergo this prestigious Prosecution Residential School program for nine months and were issued certificates recently.

They are part of the 5th batch of trainers who have undergone the Prosecution Residential School program initiated by the Papua New Guinea – Australia Policing Partnership or PNG – APP.

The legal clearance for the single source procurement contract was presented to the Acting Governor General Sir Gibbs Salika today, by the Procurement Division of the Office of the State Solicitor.

Present for the signing of this contract were contract participants and included Police Commissioner David Manning, Ela Motors PNG Chief Executive Officer Mitsuyoshi Okutsu, and Ela Motors PNG Chief Operations Officer, Eymard Joseph. Among other dignitaries was Secretary for the Department of Personnel Management, Taies Sansan.

Not all Police Officers are bad: Wagambie

He said in every organization there are certain individuals that spoil the good reputation of an organisation but the rest perform their duty ethically.

Wagambie Jr was speaking at a press conference held recently regarding the death of an 18-year-old boy believed to have died from police brutality.

“There is no such organization that have every member performing perfectly, and that is the same in the police force, because there are many good police officers who worked tirelessly to ensure the community is safe while few behave unethically,” he said.
