"Non-lethal" shotgun bean bag rounds and pepper spray were being used to subdue protesters at a North Dakota camp, the Associated Press quoted a state official as saying.

Two helicopters and a fixed-wing aeroplane flew overhead as officials made warnings over a loudspeaker.

The $3.7bn (£2.8bn) Dakota Access pipeline has prompted huge protests.

Native Americans have halted its construction in North Dakota. The pipeline will run 1,168 miles (1,870km) through Iowa, Illinois, and North and South Dakota.

One protester is in a critical condition after a "civilian on civilian" incident, the city said.

Riot police have lined the streets to face off against hundreds of protesters and tear gas has been fired.

Protesters are angry that a 43-year-old man, Keith Lamont Scott, was killed by police on Tuesday.

Police said Mr Scott had been repeatedly told to drop his handgun before he was shot.

But his family dispute that narrative and say he was reading a book.

His death sparked violent protests on Tuesday night, leaving 16 officers injured.

Surprised riot police scrambled for their helmets as the huge crowd suddenly surged from the front of the train.

Police were able to block only a minority of the estimated 500 people inside. Police pushed those they blocked back onto the train amid much shouting and screaming and infants crying.

Many of the mask-wearing protesters carried wooden bats and pieces of smashed paving stones, in the worst clashes seen since Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' left-wing government was formed six months ago.

The clashes died down as a debate got underway in parliament on a new austerity bill.
