Western prepares to receive Ambassador Supandy

North Fly MP James Donald, who is also Vice Minister for Mining and Border Development, said Ambassador Supandy’s visit is a result of continued discussions between the province and the Indonesian Embassy on the border developments in Western, including investments and opportunities in commerce and trade.

Donald said the Indonesian Ambassador will first visit the Ok Tedi Mine in Tabubil, and Ambaga Border Post in North Fly, and further down to South Fly District.

PNG yet to ratify border agreement

Since its inception in 1983, the Agreement has undergone three reviews, the first review was undertaken in 1993, the second one in 2003 and the third was undertaken in 2013, after which Indonesia has formally ratified the 2013 revised Agreement whilst PNG is yet to do so.

This agreement is now up for review but before that takes place, PNG must ratify the agreement and thereafter have it subjected for review by both the two contracting parties.

Indonesia Commits To Maintain Relations

In terms of political, security and defence cooperation, both countries base bilateral relations on the 1986 Treaty of Mutual Respect, Friendship and Cooperation.

“We understand that differences may arise in terms of policy and circumstances, but as next door neighbours we remain committed to maintain the mutual respect and friendship we have developed through the years,” says Indonesian Ambassador to PNG, Andriana Supandy.

He said Government of the Republic of Indonesia hopes to enhance bilateral relations with PNG in various fields, including political and security.

Supandy stated that Indonesia also would like to encourage business opportunities and cooperation in trade, investment and tourism.

The Governor General accepted Ambassador Supandy’s Letter of Credence, saying sharing a border with Indonesia, PNG views it to be a very significant and strategic partner for security, border development and increased bilateral relationship.
